EHS Today’s National Safety Survey collected the responses of over 780 safety professionals across many industries who shared their goals, experience and challenges. This year’s survey focused on the impact a new administration will have on the agencies that regulate occupational safety, health and the environment, and the impact the Internet of Things and the Industrial Internet of Things are having on the practice of EHS and the workplace.

EHS professionals also shared how they are using analytics to track important workplace data such as near misses, training, employee activities and health, safety activities and more, and discuss the Internet of Things and how they’re using everything from smart phone apps to robots to drones in the workplace.

A few key points:

71% of respondents saw an increase in their organization’s budget for occupational safety and health compared to the previous year.

85% said they use leading indicators to measure safety performance.

60% thought the Trump Administration would not have a positive effect on OSHA.

The survey examines issues most top of mind within the safety community including the top three commonly used indicators to measure safety performance, and ways executives are taking an active role in keeping workers safe. While safety leadership from the top down signals as one of the keys to employee engagement and positive safety culture, priorities like a safety manager’s role, and potential budget cuts for essential government agencies were also at the top of the list.
